Translating images embedded in PowerPoint files

Overview

When you upload a PowerPoint (.pptx) file to Smartcat for translation, Smartcat translates the document's text, including headings, body text, speaker notes, and other editable text elements. Images embedded in the file are not translated as part of this process.

To translate text inside images (such as diagrams, infographics, or screenshots embedded in a slide or page), use Smartcat's Image Translation feature separately, then re-insert the translated images into your file.

When to use it

Use this workflow when your PowerPoint file contains:

• Diagrams or charts with text labels

• Infographics or screenshots with embedded text

• Training slides with annotated images

• Any image where the text inside needs to appear in the target language

How to use it

Step 1 — Translate the document text

1. Go to Projects in your Smartcat workspace

   

2. Click + New Project to create a new project and upload your .pptx file

3. Set your source and target languages, then run AI translation or assign linguists

4. Download the translated file when translation is complete

The document text is now translated. Images in the file remain unchanged.

Step 2 — Translate the embedded images

For each image that contains text you need to translate:

1. Extract the image from your file (right-click the image in PowerPoint or Word and select Save as Picture)

2. Upload the image to the image translator, or ask Smartcat AI chat and ask it to translate the image.

3. Select your source and target languages, and run the translation

4. Review and edit the translated text in the image editor

5. Click Download to save the translated image

Step 3 — Re-insert the translated images

1. Open your translated document file

2. Delete the original image from the slide or page

3. Insert the downloaded translated image in its place

4. Resize or reposition as needed to match the original layout

Your document now contains both translated text and translated images.

Requirements and limitations

• Image translation is a separate step from document translation for PowerPoint. There is no single automated workflow that handles both

• Each image must be extracted, translated, and re-inserted individually

• Image Translation supports common formats including PNG, JPG, JPEG, BMP, PCX, JP2, JPC, JFIF, TIF, TIFF, GIF
