Using the Smartcat AI Slack app

Overview

The Smartcat AI Slack app lets you talk to your Chief of Staff — your personal Smartcat AI co-worker — directly from Slack without switching to the Smartcat web app. Once you install the Smartcat AI app in Slack, you can message it to run the same operations you'd normally perform through Smartcat's built-in chat: ask questions, research information, create content, build automations, and manage your work — all from a Slack conversation.

Your Chief of Staff responds only to you, remembers your preferences and context across conversations, and keeps your conversation history private.

Requirements and limitations

  • The @Smartcat AI Slack app must be installed in your Slack workspace.

  • You interact with your Chief of Staff as yourself. It only responds to you and works from your own context and permissions.

  • Available operations match your Chief of Staff's capabilities in the Smartcat chat. Anything it can do in Smartcat, it can do from Slack.

How it works

Step 1 - Install the @Smartcat AI app in your Slack workspace

If you're a Slack workspace admin or owner

  1. Open the Smartcat AI install link and click Add to Slack.

  2. Review the permissions screen showing what the app can access, then click Allow.

  3. @Smartcat AI is now available to everyone in the workspace. No one in the workspace needs to install it individually.

If you're a member and your workspace requires app approval

  1. In Slack, click Tools in the sidebar (or More if you don't see it) → Apps

  2. Search for Smartcat AI and click Add, then Add to Slack.

  3. Add a note about why you need it if your admins require one, and click Submit. Your admins get a notification, and you'll be notified once they review it.

Admins control this under Admin → Apps and workflows → App Management Settings, where they can pre-approve Smartcat AI so members can add it without a request.

📌 Installing the app makes it available in the Slack workspace, but each individual must still sign in with their own Smartcat account (step 2). Individuals only ever see their own data.

  1. Log in to your Smartcat account in the Smartcat AI app to connect your account and manage projects, linguistic assets, and more within Smartcat. The app prompts you to sign in when you attempt to access your Smartcat account, or you can use the command /smartcat-ai-login . The app provides you a link you can use to sign-in.

    1. You can also disconnect your Smartcat account from the app with /smartcat-ai-logout command.

    2. You can use the /smartcat-ai-status command to determine which account is logged in to you’re connected to and what services are available to the app.

📌All three commands described above reply only to the person who ran the request, so they are safe to use in a shared channel.

  1. Start a conversation — message the @Smartcat AI bot directly, or mention it in a thread.
    1. A new top-level message starts a new conversation with Smartcat. To continue an existing conversation, reply inside the thread. That thread is the same conversation in Smartcat, and you can pick it up in the web app, too.

  2. Ask or delegate — type your request in plain language, just as you would in the Smartcat chat. For example:

    • Ask a question or research something across your connected systems

    • Create content in Smartcat (translations, reports, summaries)

    • Set up or manage an automation for your Chief of Staff or Smartcat AI co-workers

    • Paste a link to a Notion page and ask for a translation of that page

    • Ask for the status of your projects

    • Request an ROI report or another report from Smartcat

  3. Get your reply in Slack — your Chief of Staff responds in the same Slack conversation.

The Smartcat AI app works in Slack’s AI assistant panel, with suggested prompts when you open a new thread. Long-running translations receive a completion card in the original thread when they are finished.

The Slack app is the same Chief of Staff you use within the Smartcat web app, with the same memory and preferences. Each slack thread is its own conversation, and it is stored in Smartcat, so you can open that same thread in the Smartcat web app and continue it there.

⚠️ Slack has no workspace picker. If a you belong to more than one Smartcat workspace, Slack binds to one account with no way to switch.

FAQs

Can everyone on my team use it?

Each person interacts with their own personal Chief of Staff. The bot must be installed in the Slack workspace, and each user talks to their own agent.
